A low, mounding Mediterranean shrub with silky, silver leaves and white, morning-glory-style flowers that open from pink-tinged buds. It brings a soft, bright texture to sunny beds and sets off darker greens and desert accents.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub, groundcover and succulent schedule in our Landscape Care guide while it establishes. After that it needs little. Too much water, especially in winter, leads to root rot, so lean is better.
Pruning
A light trim in fall keeps it full if it starts to look leggy. Give it room to spread; plants squeezed into small spaces tend to struggle.
Soil
It wants gravelly, fast-draining soil and is happy with the Valley’s alkaline conditions. Poor drainage is the most common reason it fails.
How our designers use it
A silver accent
Its silver foliage brightens a bed and stands out against deep green shrubs, dark boulders and gravel.
Front of the bed
A tidy mound for the edge of beds and walkways, where the flowers can be seen up close.
With agaves and yuccas
It mixes well with agaves, red yucca and other low-water plants that like the same lean watering.
Good to know
Around the pool
No thorns and low litter make it comfortable near a pool deck. Keep it out of spots that stay wet from splash-out or overspray, since constantly damp soil shortens its life.
