A low, trailing succulent from South Africa with plump green leaves and yellow daisy-like flowers that appear off and on through much of the year. It spreads quickly, needs little water outside summer, and fills sunny banks and borders with a clean green mat.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub, groundcover and succulent schedule in our Landscape Care guide. Keep it on the dry side once established, but expect it to need more regular water during the hottest months. Avoid soggy soil.
Pruning
Little is needed. Trim edges back from walks and clear out any patches that die out after summer.
Heat
It can die back in extreme heat and regrow quickly once temperatures cool. A spot with a little afternoon shade, or away from reflected heat, helps it through summer. Birds sometimes peck the leaves for moisture in the dry months.
How our designers use it
Banks and borders
It covers sunny slopes and bed edges with a low, even mat.
Around cactus and agaves
Its fleshy leaves and yellow flowers fit naturally beneath barrels, agaves and other succulents.
Rock gardens
It trails over boulders and gravel and softens hard edges.
Good to know
Around the pool
No thorns and low litter. The flowers attract bees, so keep it a few feet back from where people sit or swim.
