A low, stemless yucca from Texas with pale blue-gray leaves that soften the edges of a bed. It stays compact, sends up tall spikes of white flowers in spring and handles both full sun and partial shade.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub, groundcover and succulent schedule in our Landscape Care guide. A little summer water keeps it looking full. Hold back in winter, since soggy soil causes root and crown rot.
Pruning
Cut spent flower stalks after bloom. That is all it needs.
Shade
It grows well in partial shade, though it blooms less there.
Pests
Spider mites are the most common pest; a rinse with water usually handles them.
How our designers use it
Massing
Planted in drifts, the pale leaves form a quiet, cool-toned groundplane that pairs well with gravel and boulders.
Borders
Its low, tidy form edges a bed or walk without the bulk or hazard of larger yuccas.
Containers
It stays small enough for a pot for years and handles the partial shade of a covered patio.
Good to know
Around the pool
The tips are sharp but flexible, so it is gentler than most yuccas. Still, keep it a step back from where people walk barefoot.
Pets
Yucca is on the ASPCA’s list of plants toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Discourage pets from chewing on it.
