A low, mounding groundcover with fine, bright green, lemon-scented leaves and small yellow flower spikes in spring and fall. It handles full sun and reflected heat on little water, and rabbits tend to leave it alone.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub, groundcover and succulent schedule in our Landscape Care guide. It is drought tolerant once established but looks fuller with some summer water. It needs good drainage.
Pruning
Cut back by about half every year or two in late winter. It regrows quickly in warm weather and stays compact instead of leggy.
Winter look
It may thin or lose leaves in a cold winter and fills back in come spring.
How our designers use it
Hot, reflected spots
It holds up beside driveways, walls and parking areas where reflected heat burns other groundcovers.
Under desert trees
Our designers use it as a fine-textured carpet beneath palo verdes and mesquites, around agaves and boulders.
Mass plantings
Several plants together make a soft, even green cover across a large bed.
Good to know
Around the pool
Soft, thornless and low-litter, so it is a comfortable choice near decks and paths.
Rabbits
One of the more reliable groundcovers where rabbits are a problem.
