A low, rounded native shrub with fine, gray-green leaves and flat clusters of tiny white to pale pink flowers. Its delicate look hides a tough plant that takes full sun, poor rocky soil and very little water.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide while it establishes. After that, this is a true desert native and should be kept lean. It prefers rocky, well-drained soil and does poorly when kept wet.
Pruning
Shear off the dried flower heads if you prefer a tidier look. A light trim in winter or early spring keeps it from becoming woody and open.
Wildlife
The flowers draw bees and butterflies, and birds eat the seeds.
How our designers use it
Slopes and rocky ground
It handles shallow, rocky soil and helps hold banks and berms.
Native and habitat gardens
Its long-lasting flowers and seeds support pollinators and birds in a naturalized area.
Fine texture among bold shapes
Its soft mound fills gaps between boulders, cactus and agaves.
Good to know
Around the pool
No thorns and little litter. It suits gravel areas near the pool deck, though its flowers do draw bees.
