Mock Orange

Pittosporum tobira

Mock Orange
Shrubs

A dense, glossy evergreen shrub with clusters of creamy white spring flowers that smell like orange blossoms. Dwarf forms stay low and mounded, and the plant holds its clean, formal look with very little effort when it gets the right exposure.

Living with it in the Phoenix Valley

Watering

Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide. It needs regular summer water to stay full and glossy, and it does not like soggy soil.

Pruning

Light heading back keeps the shape. Avoid shearing it into hard shapes, which thins the plant and removes the flowers. Overgrown plants can be renewed with heavier pruning.

Heat and sun

Hot afternoon sun and reflected heat scorch the leaves, even on some north sides in early summer. East-facing beds suit it best.

Pests

Watch for aphids and scale in spring and mites in summer. Yellowing leaves usually point to iron chlorosis in alkaline soil.

How our designers use it

Foundation and entry plantings

Dwarf forms make a clean, low mass along a shaded front walk or the east side of the house.

Courtyards and planters

Its glossy leaves and fragrance suit protected courtyards and large patio containers.

Informal hedges

Full-size plants form a soft evergreen screen where there is room and some afternoon shade.

Good to know

Around the pool

No thorns and little litter. Open pool decks are usually too hot and bright for it; it fits shaded corners better.
