A fast, upright Tecoma hybrid with rich green leaves and clusters of orange trumpet flowers through the warm months. It loves heat, draws hummingbirds and gives a lush, subtropical look on modest water.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide. It survives on little water, but regular deep watering from spring through fall gives fuller growth and many more flowers. Ease off in fall so it heads into winter less tender.
Pruning
Leave frost-damaged growth in place until the danger of frost has passed in spring, then cut it back. It regrows quickly and flowers on new growth. Avoid shearing into tight shapes, which removes the flower clusters at the branch tips.
Cold
A typical winter may brown the leaves. A hard freeze in the mid-teens can take it to the ground, but the roots are hardy and it usually returns by late spring.
Feeding
A light feeding in spring and again in early summer keeps it green and blooming.
How our designers use it
Tall screen
Its quick upright growth softens block walls and hides equipment or neighboring second stories within a season or two.
Hummingbird garden
The tubular flowers are a reliable hummingbird draw from spring through fall.
Hot, reflected spots
It thrives against west walls and beside paving, where many flowering shrubs struggle.
Good to know
Around the pool
Spent flowers drop through the warm season, and the blooms attract bees and hummingbirds. Plant it back from the water’s edge and away from seating.
