Potato Vine - White

Solanum jasminoides

White Potato Vine
Vines

A fast, light-textured twining vine with clusters of small white star-shaped flowers. In mild Phoenix winters it can bloom nearly all year, which makes it a good choice for a soft, lush look on a trellis or fence.

Living with it in the Phoenix Valley

Watering

Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide. It prefers soil amended with some organic matter and steady moisture, especially through the summer.

Pruning

It grows quickly and benefits from a hard cutback now and then to keep it dense. Trim away runners that root along the ground.

Cold

A hard freeze can knock it to the ground. Established plants usually come back from the roots in spring.

Pests

Watch for aphids, whiteflies and spider mites, especially in warm, dry stretches. A strong rinse of water often keeps them in check.

How our designers use it

Quick cover

Its fast growth fills a new trellis or fence panel sooner than slower vines.

White gardens and evening spaces

Its white flowers read well at dusk, so it suits patios used after sunset.

Softening structures

Its fine, airy habit softens a pergola post or wall without looking heavy.

Good to know

Around the pool

No thorns, and litter is modest. Fallen flowers and leaves are small, but we still keep it off fences that hang over the water.
