Tangerine Cross Vine

Bignonia capreolata ‘Tangerine Beauty’

Tangerine Beauty Cross Vine
Vines

A fast, semi-evergreen vine that covers itself in tangerine-orange trumpet flowers in spring. It climbs with its own tendrils, is fully cold hardy here and uses modest water once established, which makes it a dependable choice for walls and fences.

Living with it in the Phoenix Valley

Watering

Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide while it establishes. Once settled, it tolerates some drought, though regular water keeps it fuller through summer.

Pruning

Prune after the spring bloom to guide growth and keep it within its space. It is a strong climber, so check yearly that it is not reaching gutters, roof edges or nearby trees.

Heat

It handles Phoenix summers well but can struggle on west-facing walls with reflected sun. An east exposure or filtered sun suits it best.

How our designers use it

Covering view fences and walls

It climbs a wrought-iron fence or block wall with little tying, building a green screen with a strong spring show.

Hummingbird color

Its orange trumpets draw hummingbirds and pair well with purple and blue flowering plants below.

Arbors and pergolas

Trained over a shade structure, it adds seasonal color overhead.

Good to know

Around the pool

No thorns, and litter is reported to be low. Spent blooms still drop in spring, so we avoid letting it hang directly over the water.

Wall attachment

Its tendrils can cling to masonry and stucco. If a wall may need repainting or repair, grow it on a trellis set slightly off the surface.
