A tough native perennial that forms tidy, grassy mounds dotted with bright yellow daisies for much of the year. It handles full sun, summer heat and winter frost on little water, which makes it one of the most dependable small flowering plants for low-water Phoenix landscapes.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide. It is a native that should be kept lean once established. Well-drained soil matters more than extra water; it doesn’t like to sit wet.
Pruning
Shear off spent flower heads to encourage new blooms. A light trim in late winter tidies the mound before spring.
Cold
Frost doesn’t trouble it, and it keeps flowering through most Phoenix winters.
How our designers use it
Edging and borders
A low, steady line of yellow along walks, driveways and the front of beds.
With cactus and agave
It adds color at the base of succulents and boulders without competing for attention or water.
Small spaces
Its compact size suits narrow beds and tight spots beside walks where larger shrubs would crowd.
Good to know
Around the pool
Pool friendly: low litter, no thorns and no skin irritation. Spent flowers are small and tidy.
