A low South African perennial with bold daisy flowers that open in the sun. It brings strong color to beds and borders in late winter and spring, and handles heat well as long as it isn’t overwatered.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub, groundcover and succulent schedule in our Landscape Care guide. Overwatering is the most common problem; plants rot out, especially in summer heat. Keep it in well-drained soil on a lean zone.
Pruning
Snip off spent flowers to keep plants tidy. Pull out tired or rotted clumps and replant as needed.
Replanting
Gazanias can be planted most of the year outside the coldest months. Working some compost into the soil at planting gives them a good start.
How our designers use it
Seasonal color
A quick way to add bright color to a sunny bed, especially in the cooler months when many desert plants are quiet.
Edging
Its low, tidy clumps line walks and bed edges and soften the base of agaves and aloes.
Small beds and pots
It fits small spaces and containers where a larger groundcover would overrun its space.
Good to know
Around the pool
No thorns and low litter, so it works in beds beside a pool deck. The flowers close in shade and on cloudy days, so give it full sun where you want color.
