A compact pomegranate with small glossy leaves, bright orange-red flowers and miniature fruit. It handles heat and alkaline soil with ease and can be left natural or trimmed into a neat low hedge.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide. Pomegranates are fairly drought tolerant once established, but steady water through the summer keeps it full and flowering. Needs drop when it is leafless in winter.
Pruning
Trim it into shape in late winter while it is bare, and remove any suckers from the base. It takes formal shearing well, though shearing during the growing season removes some flowers and fruit.
Winter
It loses its leaves in winter, often after turning yellow in late fall. New leaves return in spring.
How our designers use it
Low formal hedge
It can be clipped into a tidy border for walks, beds and small courtyards.
Seasonal interest
Flowers, small fruit and yellow fall color give it something to show in most seasons.
Containers
Its small size suits large pots on a sunny patio.
Good to know
Around the pool
It drops leaves in late fall and small fruit can fall and stain paving. We generally keep it a few feet back from the water.
