A mounding evergreen shrub with soft gray-green leaves edged in creamy white. In spring, small clusters of cream flowers give off a sweet, orange-blossom fragrance. It brightens shaded and east-facing parts of the garden.
Living with it in the Phoenix Valley
Watering
Follow the shrub schedule in our Landscape Care guide. Deep, less frequent watering suits it better than light, frequent cycles. Good drainage is important; it is prone to root rot in soggy soil.
Pruning
It holds a natural mound with little help. Prune only when it outgrows its space, in late winter. Frequent shearing spoils its shape and cuts off flowers.
Heat and sun
Hot afternoon sun and reflected heat scorch the variegated leaves. An east or north exposure, or shade from a tree, works best.
Pests
Watch for scale and aphids on new growth. Yellowing between the veins usually points to iron deficiency in alkaline soil.
How our designers use it
Shade-side foundation plant
It softens east and north walls with light-colored foliage that reads well in shade.
Informal hedge
Planted in a row, it forms a soft, fragrant screen along patios and walkways.
Brightening dark corners
The cream-edged leaves lift shaded beds under trees and overhangs.
Good to know
Around the pool
Low litter and no thorns. Bees visit during spring bloom. Keep it out of hot, reflected spots near the water.
