Living with it in the Phoenix Valley

Watering

Follow the cactus guidance in our Landscape Care guide. Established plants need only occasional summer water, if any. Well-drained soil is a must; damp, heavy soil leads to root rot.

Pruning

Not required. Remove an arm that rubs or crowds, or to control size. Cut pieces root easily after the end calluses.

Planting

Fall or early spring planting gives it time to settle in before summer heat.

Harvest

The fruit is sweet and mild. Pick it when fully colored; fallen fruit will draw birds and other wildlife.

How our designers use it

Architectural focal point

Its upright, branching form anchors a desert garden or the corner of a large yard.

Screening

Over time it can screen a side yard, utility area or neighbor’s view.

Evening gardens

Placed within view of a patio, its night blooms become an event worth staying up for.

Good to know

Around the pool

The spines are short, but fallen flowers and fruit are messy. Keep it several feet back from the water and deck.

Size

It gets big. Plan for its full height and spread rather than trimming it to fit later.
