Organpipe Cactus

Stenocereus thurberi

Organ Pipe Cactus
Cactus & Succulents

A Sonoran Desert native that sends up many ribbed columns from a single base, like the pipes of an organ. It brings the true Arizona desert look to a landscape, needs very little water once settled, and asks for almost no care beyond room to grow and a warm spot in winter.

Living with it in the Phoenix Valley

Watering

Follow the cactus guidance in our Landscape Care guide, which means watering by hand only when the plant needs it. Established plants live mostly on rainfall. Poorly drained or constantly damp soil leads to root rot, so plant it in fast-draining, rocky ground and err on the dry side.

Pruning

None needed. Leave the stems alone; cutting them leaves permanent scars.

Cold

This is one of the more frost-sensitive columnar cactus in the Valley. On nights forecast in the mid-20s or colder, cover the growing tips with frost cloth or foam cups. Warm, south-facing spots near walls give it extra protection.

How our designers use it

A sculptural focal point

Its cluster of upright arms reads as living sculpture against a plain stucco wall or at the end of a view.

Sonoran Desert gardens

It pairs naturally with palo verdes, barrels and native shrubs for a landscape that looks like it belongs here.

Warm microclimates

Our designers like it near south- and west-facing walls, where reflected heat helps it through cold winter nights.

Good to know

Around the pool

The spines are stiff and sharp, so we keep it well back from pool decks, walkways and play areas. Give the clump room to widen without crowding a path.

Protected plant

Organ pipe cactus is protected under Arizona’s native plant law. Buy nursery-grown or properly tagged plants.
