Living with it in the Phoenix Valley

Watering

Follow the shrub, groundcover and succulent schedule in our Landscape Care guide. Like all verbenas, it needs fast-draining soil; constantly wet ground leads to rot.

Pruning

Trim lightly after a flush of bloom to keep it compact and push new flowers.

Feeding

A light feeding in spring supports a strong first bloom. It does not need much beyond that.

Cold

A hard freeze can brown it back. Wait until spring to trim off damaged growth.

How our designers use it

Bold color at ground level

Its red flowers give a bright base beneath agaves, barrels and other sculptural plants.

Pots and planters

It spills over the edges of containers and raised planters.

Rock gardens

It fills small gaps between boulders and along dry stream beds.

Good to know

Around the pool

No thorns and little litter. It does attract bees and butterflies, so keep it a short step back from where people sit and swim.
